Our Mission:

We improve economic and social insights and services to empower people as they age.

Our Impact

Spoiler alert- we’re all aging. And while many focus on the biology of aging, important social and economic needs of a growing older population are not being met. But SoFIA’s economic security, civic engagement, and caregiving programs are helping everyone thrive as they age.

of 250 seniors increased their connectivity to family and friends

We help older adults stay connected and gain economic independence in a world that now requires digital literacy in order to thrive. In 2018, we launched tech training and taught over 250 older adult students to date.

of 500+ Clients feel less lonely and isolated

We help families help their loved ones live independently by caring for a veteran family member, a disabled child, or homebound adult, with social engagement, recreation, respite, information and advocacy.

children learned reading and life skills

We help older adults remain civically engaged through our volunteer programs, which help children learn, support veterans to succeed in life and assist other seniors as they learn to use technology.

Our Programs

Retirement is not “golden” for all older adults. Over 20 million Americans aged 60+ are economically insecure—living at or below the federal poverty level. Loneliness can be just as lethal as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. SoFIA is disrupting the aging conversation in South Florida with new insights, convenings, partnerships and inclusive services.

Sofia Tech

Technology can assist with transportation, affordable housing, and socialization. Yet access to technology is challenging for seniors. Through award-winning Senior Planet and Oasis classes, which we teach throughout the community and at our TLC center, older adults are able to bridge the digital divide.

Sofia fellows

About 40 percent of people ages 55 and older are working or actively looking for work. Unemployment amongst people over 60 is over 30% in Broward. Through our curriculum and internship program, however, the valuable experience of older adults, our Fellows, is being harnessed by area nonprofits to drive change.

Whether helping with errands, coordinating medical appointments, or managing round-the-clock personal care, family caregivers are the backbone of care. But for many, the costs of caregiving are high. SofiaCare meets the needs with training, rapid response programs, and advocacy.

senior corps

Senior Corps is a network of national service programs for people 55 years and older, made up of three primary programs that each take a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. SoFIA’s volunteers address community needs including academic mentoring, elderly care, and veteran support.
